Types of Steel Wire Ropes

Steel wire rope is a flexible rope made of multiple or multiple strands of fine steel wire twisted into strands. It is made up of multiple layers of steel wire twisted into strands, and then twisted into a spiral rope with a certain number of strands at the center of the rope core. In material handling machinery, it is used for lifting, pulling, tensioning, and carrying. Steel wire ropes have high strength, light weight, smooth operation, and are not prone to sudden breakage, making them reliable in operation. We know that steel wire ropes can be divided into single wound ropes, double wound ropes, and triple wound ropes according to their winding levels. Experts point out that steel wire ropes can be divided into three types based on the contact state between each layer of steel wire in the strand: point contact, line contact, and surface contact. Firstly, let's talk about the steel wire rope in point contact. The diameter of the steel wires in the point contact wire rope strand is the same. In order to evenly distribute the force on the steel wire, the helix angle of each layer of steel wire after twisting is roughly equal, but the twisting distance is not equal, so the inner and outer layers of steel wire intersect with each other and form a point contact state.

Secondly, the wire rope in contact with the wire. The twist distance of each layer of steel wire in the wire rope strand is equal, and the inner and outer layers of steel wire are in contact with each other on a spiral line, forming a line contact state. The performance of wire rope in line contact is greatly improved compared to point contact, so it is widely used.

Finally, a sealed steel wire rope, also known as a type of surface contact steel wire rope. The outer layer is made of B-shaped steel wire, with a smooth surface and good wear resistance. Compared with other types of steel wire ropes of the same diameter, it has a higher tensile strength and can withstand lateral pressure. However, it has poor flexibility, complex process, and high manufacturing cost. It is commonly used as a load-bearing cable, such as in cable cranes and overhead cableways.
